A Scenic Photographic Tour of "Sunny Jim Cave" Tunnel and Cave Store.
A historic landmark, The Cave Store is home of the world famous Sunny Jim Cave. You can access this unique and beautiful cave through a man-made tunnel from the Cave Store from which you can enter Sunny Jim Cave by land. Named "Sunny Jim" by Frank Baum of Wizard of Oz fame. The mouth of the cave reminded people of W. W. Denslow's cartoon charcter "sunny Jim" who was a mascot for the British Force Wheat cereal products of the 1920's.
Two year's work by laborers hired by Gustav Shultz in 1902 and 1903, using only pick and shovel, gave this cave to the American public. Several years after it's completion, 145 steps were built into the lighted tunnel. These steps descend from the Cave Store to the main chamber of Sunny Jim Cave. Cave Store location (address): 1325 Cave Street, La Jolla, California 92037; Phones: (858) 459-0746, (858) 456-1886.
